Part of our tour in Cebu was to attack shopping malls and buy pasalubongs for our davaoeño loved ones. While everyone was busy strolling through a lot of stores, packed with a lot of goodies, I managed to get away from the ‘tourists’ crowd, and pampered myself with a dose of ‘cinematic’ experience. I hurreid to the Silver Screen area, and chose Meet the Fockers as a worthy pick from all the Valentine-inspired movies that were present in the choices.

Indeed, I loved it. I don’t care what critics say, I said to myself, thinking about the ways critics scrutinize films, looking through the tiniest detail, which oftentimes, either has no releveance anymore to the issue or plainly just too tiny to ever be noticed by regular moviegoers.

The film was about one of the difficulties a person planning to get married undergoes, which is, to be accepted by your future in-laws. De Niro plays an uptight head of the Byrnes family, in which his daughter is about to be married to loser-looking-only-begotten-son(Stiller) of the Fockers clan. The difference of the two families is quite huge. The Byrnes being professional, competitive, and very much objective, while the Fockers, real, passionate, and very much loving. For the Byrnes, winning is everything, while for the Fockers, it’s how you play the game.

I can’t help but be mesmerized by the characters of Hoffman and Streisand. I believe they are such wonderful parents. Though they certainly have their own flaws, I kinda envy the kind of life Stiller’s character must have had, having them in his life.

Generally, it was a feel-good movie. Though, there were some antics I didn’t like such as the obscene doggie moments, and some foul language, I still say it is worth the watch. It made me smile while on my way to the stores, thinking if it’s good to persuade my parents to make a shrine for my simple and small achievements, just like what the Fockers did. c”,)
